Emma Williams’ work continues to be a morphing of real locations, with the constructed and imagined worlds. Combining traditions of landscape painting and cartography, new and contorted views emerge where the viewer is simultaneously above and within.

Emma Williams’ work continues to be a morphing of real locations, with the constructed and imagined worlds. Combining traditions of landscape painting and cartography, new and contorted views emerge where the viewer is simultaneously above and within.
“Living and working in a big city, the maps I use to navigate around this multi-faceted place become an integral part of my urban living. While the work signifies my experience and understanding of a place through their references to maps, the mapping element is distorted to create a sense of place that is now strange and unfamiliar.”
It is with this fascination of the complexity and resonance of a place, combined with the sense of the physicality of both viewing a landscape and the landscape being part of ones self that continues to inform Emma’s current practice and leads her to question the relationship between herself as a painter and her location.
