"The Rheidol River and surrounding valley near my home are a familiar and constant motif in my painting. Combining the poetic qualities of landscape and the physicality of oil paint, I try to evoke a sense - and a sensation - of this elusive place as dynamically as possible.
My coastal paintings have been an ongoing project, alongside other work, for several years – drawing on my experiences of the West Wales coast and also of Cornwall and Pembrokeshire.
In my figure paintings I begin by trying to capture something of the essence of my human subject - be it a pose or expression. I work quickly, spontaneously and selectively, leaving only the most vital elements of the figure and the space around it.
I use fluid and workable materials which cross the boundary between drawing and painting, hoping they might do something unexpected, and give the figure a spark of its own life. I want the resulting image to surprise me - to reveal a small insight into some human emotion or state of being."
