New Blood Art Commentary

Lucy Gogoliuk’s watercolours and oils are images of colour and gesture. Looking at their paintings, the application of paint, the brushwork, is immediately apparent to the viewer. Dabbed gestures and soft mark-marking typify their use of watercolours, the dilution of the colours adding a dreamlike softness to the images while providing the viewer plenty to work with, to contemplate. Eschewing conventional perspective in favour of a painterly flatness, the works have a sewn-together quality, the pictorial plane a ground for combining abstraction with familiar motifs and moments of figuration: daily life collides with memory, perception and visual language. For Gogoliuk, this is a means of confronting and transcending trauma while exploring family lineage. The resulting paintings are rich and colourful, endlessly captivating and engaging.

Artist Statement

In the fluidity of paint, I find a language of emotion and experience. Each block of colour is a fragment of memory, reshaped and redefined. My work is a reflection of my journey and is shaped by the landscapes of my memory. Drawing upon grid-based compositions I navigate themes of trauma and healing. Through the interplay of form and emotion, I seek to turn darkness into light. With every square of colour I find beauty within sadness.
