Frances Hatch creates joyful works that slow down the way we look at the world, encouraging us to attend to it, while restoring our capacity for wonder.
“Remarkable moments lived prompt me to make work. Making artwork is my way of sharing them.
I thrive on fresh air and attend to weather, seasonal shifts and all those subtle changes in temperature, light and humidity over the course of a day. Using waterbased media on different sorts of paper and surfaces (often integrating sand, clay or found textures or tools from the ground around me) allows me and my materials to respond moment by moment.
The fast changing light and intensity of colour at either ends of the day is a particular interest of mine. I wrestle with the sensations as I am caught up in the energy of it all. Hopefully this is reflected in the gestures and animation of the marks.
I make a good deal of my work on site - or at least begin the process in the landscape, often un- populated space. I'm renting a disused coastguard lookout this winter but I have a van with loads of space in the back as a mobile studio."
