"My work focuses on the human form, especially female - with my main concerns deriving from images of feminine beauty which have always both captivated and terrorized me. This concern with female beauty, image and identity has many facets - one of which is a fascination with the power of images, with the way personal and cultural influences shape someone's looks. I am interested in how the same person could have a million different faces depending on how they respond to these factors, then represent themselves to the world. This in turn has led me to develop a particular interest in the way in which the self can be extended and expressed through the addition of a multitude of objects to the body that almost become part of the individual’s form, and an essential part of their individuality. My portraits focus on the subject’s extensions and additions just as much as on the figure itself, as I feel they are a vital part of the image the subject projects into the world, allowing a much richer insight into their identity.
The other side of my compulsion to create idealized images of women and my continuing fascination with beauty, youth and physical perfection appears to be closely bound up with a morbid and pervasive awareness of death and decay; the inevitable effects of time and age being something which continue to haunt me.
These themes and images give me a base from which I can open up into zones of feeling - of colour texture and surface, which I work through with oils and other media exploring the paint through form and vice versa. This approach to making art is an integral aspect of my existence and allows me to find a way of working through my own notions of self and other, of image and meaning."
