Since graduating with a first in 2006, Hansford has built up a distinctive body of work, that manages to be reminiscent of Bacon, Matisse, Picasso and Tolouse Lautrec, while being utterly contemporary and original. Displaying an array of references deepened by sharp observation, the painter weaves together elements of eroticism, dark humour, imagination and an acute sense of composition. Gothic, bleak, exotic, domestic, illustrative, textured. Both painterly and displaying fluid draughtsmanship, the work is thoroughly engaged in art history and contemporary society.
“My work centers around the development of characters. As such, each painting has an individual essence, reflecting these different characters and the worlds they inhabit. My figurative pieces reference areas of fashion, costume, photography and art that influence me.”
