Both a painter and filmmaker, Sophie Baker is an extraordinary landscape artist, who has developed a coherent style that is instantly recognizable. Whether documenting landscapes traveled through with idiosyncratic colours and characteristic tact, or creating those wonderful paintings of nocturnal glow that capture the ephemeral and touching moments when one glimpses the fleeting landscape from the window of a car at night, Baker’s paintings are achievements. Baker’s expertise in film is evident in the atmosphere she creates through her use of light and composition.
“My paintings are rooted in the Romantic tradition, and my work concerns itself above all with a subjective and individual response to the world around me. The main themes of my painting are those of buildings reclaimed; with the terror associated with the sudden collapse of man-made structures; with the formality of gardens.
My aesthetic is played out against a backdrop of the tension between man and the natural environment, often represented in the motif of abandoned industrial sites — stripped of functionality and human purpose — left to be surrounded, filled and submerged by the relentless growth of plants. In turn, my paintings of high-roofed hot houses and formal gardens explore man’s constant attempts to bring order upon the natural world — and draw us to consider the indeterminate areas that lie between the natural and man-made.”
