Energetic, atmospheric and vibrant; Horkan’s abstracts are much sought after. They have the capacity to transform any interior; these paintings are substantial presences and invigorating, visceral celebrations.
“During my studies in textile design I vigorously explored the tangible, tactile qualities of unconventional materials. In my current practice, I layer plaster with thick undiluted oil paint to give rich painterly textures, which are evocative and seem fragile.
More recently the use of a raw, organic colour palette, depicting elements of movement intrigues me. My work celebrates the simplest of forms, and intends to deliver them into a contemporary age, through conveying honesty and emotion. I focus on the relationship between the ability to manoeuvre paint and the expression of fluidity and energy.
I explore flexibility and challenge the scale of how each form is depicted. Each one of my paintings takes me on journey, through admitting the accidence of some created textures, I then develop these accidents as focal points for the next piece.
The small, initially irrelevant experience, can hold the most significance. In this complex world of diversity, innovation and change sometimes the most simple and beautiful elements can go unnoticed. Exposing the subject in its most natural form has, for me, a more lasting resonance. Art should have the power to move you like music, like dance it’s a celebration be it simply of colour, form or fluidity. If it doesn’t dance for you there’s no point over analysing it, it’s either there or it isn’t."
