Animated, pulsating, and energetic James creates unusual paintings that are contemporary and explosive. The circular works reference ineluctability; alien and Technicolored they retain a sense of the organic, and seem as inevitable as the natural patterns that inform them.
“I have a firmly established and long standing interest in naturally occurring forms and patterns, particularly relating to the effects of natural forces upon paint media. Within these areas of interest I have done numerous and inventive experiments with the dynamics of flow, allowing for natural forces to take over the process of mark making.
The overarching choice in the final aesthetics of the pieces is largely influenced by lyrical and abstract expressionism, but with a greater openness to chance playing a part in the work. My overall aim throughout my practice is the discovery and development of new techniques for producing art and paint effects.”
