Matthew Dines synthesises light-hearted humour with immense beauty in his striking Urban Unrest Series and the Miniature Conflict series. Dines creates colossal environments - both natural and architectural - out of little, hinting at the sublime, against which the figures appear obscure, and capturing our insignificance in a momentous world. The images are always cinematic, and often hint at epic narratives, or suggest a dramatic and pivotal moment.
“The subjects in my photography can vary greatly. I am drawn to vast or dramatic landscapes, captured in a lively and vibrant way with an emphasis on bold high contrasting colours and with a particular focus on dominating extensive skies. Passionate about traveling and exploration, I love capturing the details that stand out, working creatively with light to create dramatic images through shadows, silhouettes and colours.
In the studio I also like to create dark, suspicious images that have strong but ambiguous narratives dealing with real life issues in today’s society such as fears of war and terrorism. I am influenced by artists such as Edward Hopper, Ansel Adams, David Levinthal, Harry Gruyaert and Cindy Sherman."
