“Using both man-made objects and environments, and the landscape and natural, organic forms as source material, I began producing pieces that are more about the process of painting rather than the outcome. 

When producing my work I begin with a few source images in mind, but due to the nature of my practice I will never know how the final piece is going to turn out.I tend to learn as I go with a painting. I instinctively apply marks, colour and texture rather than following a proscribed methodology in order to create unpredictable and vibrant backgrounds. I then contrast this free and gestural starting point by creating more in the way of structured shapes and forms.

I mask out areas of the piece that I believe to be visually exciting, then paint over the piece, leaving behind traces of the painting’s origins. I sometimes do this many times to create numerous layers that offer glimpses into the history of the painting, or sometimes a piece may consist of just two or three layers. It all depends upon my desired overall aesthetic.

An important aspect of my work is the idea of contrast between the chaotic or uncontrollable qualities of natural forms with the often structured and orderly qualities of the man made world.”
