Duffy’s drawings are intimate and frank, while being respectful, detailed and not invasive - they have a quiet decorum. We are encouraged to recognize these subjects as subjects, creatures other than those of our imagination.
“My working practice is predominantly focused on producing semi-realistic drawings of human figures, isolated onto a page and intentionally placed under full and intense speculation from the viewer.
I try to establish an emotional reaction in the viewer in order for them to empathise with the subject and interpret from the character what they will.
I tend mostly to work from photographs, as it enables me to take the figure from it's surrounding context and to place it in a state of, often sole, communication with the viewer.”
