Drawing inspiration from modernist principles Ridley seeks to establish an art of spontaneity, physicality and style that appeals to a contemporary sensibility. Through an obsessive act of painterly application and multi-layering Ridley’s process brings about a distinct interplay between colour and form.
“Using a combination of painting techniques the final process becomes an alchemical experiment as each piece evolves and develops its own unique palette; often layers are reworked or erased during this process until the image reaches a desired aesthetic. The methodology of transformation in itself becomes fundamental in emphasising the surface and materiality of the painterly mark, every line taking its own position with its immediate density. The schematic ground in this sense collaborates in a single mass of visual activity, through a disjointed perspective the geometry within engages in a playful discourse with the viewer.
By playing with elements of perspective and form a fragmented architecture evolves-organic yet composed this illusionistic space is constantly articulating the painting’s surface. For me there is an ongoing dialogue between elements of design and architecture within the work. Whilst there is a strong appreciation for the aesthetic element, my approach towards painting is very experimental which allows for an exciting playfulness with materiality, form and subject matter.”
