Using urban tapestries to reflect the contemporary world, Moemi Takano combines culturally potent handcraft with contemporary reinvention. The distinctive ethnic traits of her craft are not lost to modernism – instead, Takano uses a variety of mark-making, embroidery, and dyeing techniques to create captivating homages to traditional Japanese handcraft, then reimagines them in a contemporary light. Her work emits a powerful message which serves to remind us of the resilient bonds between new and old.
My current artistic practice revolves around the idea of the subversive aspect of handcraft, particularly that of textiles. By applying various mark-making methods such as print, dyeing and embroidery, I create surfaces that explore intersections between text, textile and art history.
