2 new artists: Madeleine Peters and Sojourner Mayer
Meet 2 new graduate artists:
Madeleine Peters
It is impossible to separate Madeleine Peters’s work from the vast and ancient countryside that inspires it - Somerset’s Isles of Avalon. Peters’s sensitivity to the natural beauty of the area, particularly the subtle shifts in seasonal light, results in moving abstracts that capture the essenceof eternal geographies. Her use of colour and texture taps into the poignancy of our interactionwith nature, how often its timeless workings are imbued with personal emotions and meaning. The Isle itself is permeated with mysticality; in Celtic mythology the land towering above theSomerset Levels is said to link to another world. Peters mindfully depicts the rich agriculturalarea in all its dramatic transformations, casting viewers both up into the ether and down to earth.
Sojourner Mayer
Sojourner Mayer’s wearable art is the result of deeply personal explorations into intimacy. What does it mean to conjure desire out of thin air? A sense of ceremony is brought to her pastel- coloured pieces. Exploring a variety of techniques such as knitting and bead looming, colours transform into centralised graphics and cosy forms. These tactile objects specifically exist as keepsakes alongside her performance art practice; both aiming to challenge the binary presentation of sex work in popular media. Choosing neither to glamorise nor demonise, Mayer opens up nuanced spaces of dialogue that attune viewers and audiences to her colourful reality.
