2 New Artists: Sergey Davidovich and Giovanna Morando

Giovanna Morando’s elegant work bespeaks those silent moments lived in pure grace. Holding a woollen scarf up to the face for warmth, resting serenely on a towel, or flexing at the satisfaction of wearing your favourite dress… all are private moments of tactile joy. In her minimal black and white drawings, Morando directs our focus to the inserts of real-life fabrics – their intricate designs and textures take centre stage. This particular ‘Women’s Drapery Collection’ project aims to highlight the emotional resonance of fashion that often goes unnoticed, in all the ways comforting touches, snug fits, and elegant lines can alter the mood of us as wearers. Strikingly sharp and slight in their context, Morando’s work boldly reminds us style is neither fickle nor merely fanciful.

Sergey Davidovich: “This is an abstraction not completely free from figurativeness.”, Sergey Dandovich says, “or figurativeness in a furious but endless striving to become an abstraction.” This push and pull within the noble endeavour of representing truth perhaps best describes Dandovich’s enigmatic paintings. In mosaic-like patchwork forms, spindly figures emerge and enmesh in their contexts. Equally suggestive of Gaudi’s structures and Egon Schiele portraits, Dandovich balances colour against black outlines and abysses. With an Architectural background – the artist has created and implemented projects all over Europe – a certain compositional strength and intuitive feeling for design arises. Beautifully turquoise hands, as if weathered in Verdigris, swoop to cover faceless bodies in “Guess Who?” (2020), excelling in the nightmarish and playful.
