4 new artists: Emma Lawrence, Madeleine Peters, Katy Gardner and Jamie Baker
Meet 4 new graduate artists:
Katy Gardner
For Katy Gardner, what’s worth painting is the unfamiliar truth of our known surroundings. Not always easy to grasp, her work deeply focuses on these interstitial spaces; between dreaming and waking, or the interlude of a sunset before everything fades to black. The work is also process-led, meaning it heeds to the natural properties of the materials used.
Jamie Baker
Found imagery features heavily in Jamie Baker’s work, whether stumbled upon in films or discovered through vintage photographs. Each painting builds on a newly precious memento, Baker choosing the mediums of oil paint and paper to capture how a scene might mysteriously recast itself.
Emma Lawrence
Allowing the materials to speak for themselves, Lawrence’s work is based in experimental sculpture. Her work is minimalist and highly influenced by the anti-form movement where the process is the primary guidance in the art’s creation. She utilises a wide range of materials in her work, incorporating skills such as sewing, graphic design and welding in the research and creation process.
Eleanor Pearce
Describing herself as a Fibre Artist, Pearce’s work expertly mixes scientific subjects with traditional soft mediums. Centred around what parts of the body look like under the microscope her work almost sits between the abstract and the hyper realistic. Indeed, she likes to lean into the realistic elements of her work, wanting them to be educational. This objective is only furthered by the nature of the tufted rug artwork that invites touch and interaction.
