A 2021 Triumph
When an exceptional work comes along, placing it is an exciting matter. One painting from Lily Tutty’s diptych is now available: from the work’s inception through its diligent creation, Lily’s tutors were invested in ‘Iodine’ and ‘Inadine’, and Bournemouth University has since purchased the former for its collection. It’s a promising sign when tutors who know graduates year in, year out, home in on a piece as being particularly valuable. Without a doubt these two stood out at the graduate show this year, in process, vision, and scale: at 2m high, they are a spectacular experience for the senses and the intellect alike.
The work has been recognized as such: securing Tutty a nomination for the 2021 Platform Graduate Award, which sees stand-out emerging talent rewarded with professional mentoring and graduate support for the year ahead. As part of this, the duo are now on show in Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth, until December when the prize-winner will be announced. For this reason ‘Inadine’ is available for dispatch the first week of January; the price is before delivery. For non-UK buyers, please be mindful of import taxes on Fine Art for your country, as you'll be responsible for any duty that may or may not apply.
This work is the culmination of Lily’s degree focus, which she intends to continue in an MA. It manifests her abiding interest in natural forms: it feels like the texture of space we are looking at, both vegetal and mechanical but in the most rarefied of senses. The prismatic unity of the work takes place in monochrome: orange, delineated by shading, applied by acrylic. It could be the chemical formation of rock or crystal we are witnessing. The work is fantastic but in the inevitable sense of nature as captured by the artist’s surrealist automatism process of creating. Space lives, on this canvas, in its complexity and multiplicity. The depths of nature’s surfaces are conveyed through a broadly dynamic balancing act of light and shadow.
