Can we ever go home?
New artist Laura Gaiger studied at Glasgow School of Art, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Painting and Printmaking. She is currently undertaking an MFA at Bergen Faculty of Art, Music and Design, in Norway, with a focus on painting. Laura's paintings bring together an eclectic mix of techniques and imagery, unified by the recurring themes of memory and domestic life. Her work has been influenced by writers on the psychology of space, principally Gaston Bachelard, by the phenomenon of the romantic pastoral, and by the Jungian tradition of the collective unconscious - from this foundation she explores the notion of home.
"In my current work I particularly seek to evoke a sense of the ‘saudade’ or ‘hiraeth’ - bittersweet nostalgia for part-real, part-imagined histories and places. My imagery references make-believe, childhood worlds, and loss. I ask, can we ever go home? The answer is always no, but the paintings might give a fleeting glimpse of it."
