Director's Picks: A Place to Land
Whether being held close, or warmly embraced by the nostalgic interiors of times past – the notion of protection and of viewing the known, with new and wiser eyes permeates this month's curated collection.
Take ‘Together again’ by Meme Marey – in a 1960s inflected psychedelic use of patterning, shapes build up figures to a steady Klimt-like interlock. The viewer is playfully reminded just how connected we as individuals are, by invisible hooks that Marey actualises in swirling brushstrokes. Meg Miller’s minimalist sculpture ‘Landing Board II’ also offers a sense of respite, returning to the organic materials of salvaged wood, beeswax, and metal. We’re faced with the hazel and rich brown colours of the wood and all its grain, symbolising the strength of history and persistence itself.
Equally, these works show you can find a place to land in your own confidence. Making waves and stepping boldly into new mystical realms also denote a home in the self. Roselin Estephanía’s ‘La Pyrámide’ expresses this brilliantly – through its wild violet skies, holding balance - a prismatic structure at its core. A New Age colour palette is enjoyed with a number of the works in this selection, for example, in the abstract strobing of Henry Yang’s ‘Cacao’ or the floating interior scene of Alan Aitken’s ‘Custard’. We have ‘the new’ uncannily mixed with a retro sensibility – mint-greens, resin, geometric shape and luminous yellow creating new hybrid worlds for the taking by those who dare.
It’s a hero’s selection for ‘the hero’s journey’ – on arriving back at the starting point, to a place we know well, our newfound experience colouring home in a new way - as Summer comes around, and our regular surroundings open up again - alight in a new way.
