Everyone & No One: New Work by Lewis Deeney
We contacted you a little while ago to let you know of Lewis Deeney's achievements and upcoming price increase (in 2020 Lewis was selected as one of eight outstanding 2020 graduates across the UK to receive the prestigious Freelands Painting Prize and Lewis also received the William Sangster Phillips award and full funding from the University of Dundee, allowing him to continue his Fine Art studies at Masters level.)
Since then he has been shortlisted for the D31 Art prize - an international open with artists from across the globe. We have a new series of works by Deeney recently added to the site, titled 'Everyone & No One,' - the shortlisted painting was from this series, which explores our current relationship with technology and the ways in which it is changing our perception of ourselves, each other, and what it means to be human. The expressively painted surface is contrasted with the precision of the laser cutter, which cuts the geometric compositions out of the abstract painting. The process of the work's creation emphasises the integration of technology into our everyday lives. Human and machine are contrasted and composed into the finished, unified work.
"Deconstructed, over-simplified, and reconstructed out of painterly abstract shapes, the work reduces the face into an abstraction of geometric forms. Ageless, race-less, and genderless; the subject holds no belief or ideology, simultaneously showing everyone and no one. Exposing the potential loss of our humanity if we continue on our current technological trajectory. Whatever position you take, whoever you are, the work is of you and not you, everyone, and no one. See yourself in another and them in you." - Lewis Deeney
