Finding Resonance: When Art Speaks 2

Continuing to reflect on companion pieces - pairings and small groupings that seem to communicate well - amplifying, harmonising or creating new narratives together.

Starting with Gareth Griffiths’ piece Brunswick which is a real showstopper. A metre-high sculpture that would happily live indoors or out, catching the light with its glass-like sheen. This piece, though made of steel embodies a lightness - like papers caught in a whirlwind. liquid sky blue lifts the senses.

Pair this piece (indoors) with Emma Doig’s Aeriel, and there is magic. Aeriel mirrors those fluid forms, all twisting upwards at 160cm tall. Together, they’re a statement of elevated movement and grace.

Sarah Harvey’s Moment of Solitude in Emerald Waters, offers a brilliant, hyper realistic (whilst almost abstract) study of water in oil on canvas. At 160 cm across, this statement piece explores the interplay of light and motion in water. The composition suggests a recent entrance or exit.

Meanwhile David Om’s Infinite Winter Hexagon 3 creates a depth of contrast. This work features a pitch-black reverse canvas - a contemplation of the cosmos, distant stars that may no longer exist, juxtaposed against the immediacy of the tiny figurine on the bottom stretcher bar. Om’s obscure pricing may reflect a deeper artistic reference - as seems to be referring to the sound frequency of 436 Hz - a tuning fork frequency for the A4 note. This reference to sound and harmony in Om’s cosmic landscape suggests that the artwork itself serves as a point of reference, inviting us to tune into a broader existential frequency in order to maintain balance and perspective. Just as musicians use A4 to achieve perfect pitch, Om encourages us to find our own particular resonance against and within the vast cosmos.

Luo-Han Chen’s Summer Breeze evokes the delicate wish-making moment after blowing on a dandelion. the soft white tendrils floating across the canvas. This dream-like quality finds a perfect companion in Paris Foot’s Beautiful Stranger, where an embracing couple is enveloped by a floating floral cascade. Completing this trio, Crimson Spirit of the Deep introduces an underwater dimension. Its opalescent jellyfish-like tendrils echoing perfectly the fluid forms of the beautiful strangers.
