Gifts for... Daydreamers

Gifts for. Daydreamers

Everyone experiences moments where the mind drifts off into another world. Eyes open, though sight unseen with reality becoming the backdrop for a flurry of thoughts, desires and internal wanderings. A strange yet habitual phenomenon, daydreaming often brings us back in touch with ourselves.
Sigmund Freud – the father of psychoanalysis – believed adult daydreaming was powered by unconscious drives. Freud was an avid art collector. Throughout his life, he amassed a vast archive of over 2,500 arts and antiquities from ancient civilisations around the world. He displayed his collection in his home office in Vienna, and later in London. Se extensive was his collection, that his London home was converted into the Freud Museum in 1986, to showcase to the world.
Freud's techniques of dream analysis and free association had a profound influence on the Surrealist movement and of course his grandson, Lucian Freud, is one of the 21st century’s most celebrated painters.
When dreaming, certain repressions are lifted, and desires are allowed to surface in new and whimsical forms. For Freud, artists are those who work over their daydreams in a way that allows others to also enjoy them.
Our picks for this daydreamers collection certainly work in this mode, where each piece has a looseness and ephemerality that embraces new views and liminal spaces alike. From Georgia Dymock’s warping forms to Toni Cogdell’s fractured guises, we invite you to browse and let your daydreams take flight.
