Jan Valik: Keeping Company with the Abstract Greats

It’s always exciting to hear about the projects that New Blood artists are involved in. In addition to regularly updating the list of works available on our website, most of our artists are involved in exciting and thought-provoking exhibitions and events. Jan Valik is a name that you have likely seen on our website. Currently a master’s student at London’s Royal College, he continues to exhibit widely and internationally.

At present, he is part of a group exhibition, Abstract on Paper IV, at Vienna’s Galerie Amart. Alongside Valik’s playful and painterly abstractions, you may notice some famous and familiar names from the last century. Perhaps you even saw Kenneth Noland or Joan Miró’s exhibitions at the Tate galleries. Or maybe you made a trip to Barcelona, where you spent a morning at the Antoni Tápies Museum. Between these artists, they have exhibited at some of the world’s most renowned and celebrated art spaces. It is thus exciting to see Valik’s name in such company, yet it also unsurprising given his relentless output and desire to exhibit.

It is a testament to Valik’s working methodology and invention that his work always feels fresh, each new body of work different from the last, yet distinct and personal. At times, the paint bleeds, elsewhere it drips. Often, these marks provide a contrast to the confident and assertive brush strokes at play. Perhaps it is this interplay that makes Valik’s work so recognisable, makes it his own.
