Few things make us happier than new work by the artists: seeing the direction their work is taking. These two recent graduates – William Fice from Leeds University (2020) and Isaac Aldridge from Glasgow University (2022) – have a fantastic array of work up just now; enjoy taking a look at the paintings Sarah has curated from their currently available work.

How should a painting ‘hang together’? Isaac Aldridge takes our suppositions and splices them in these idiosyncratic paintings. Perhaps the use of colour is the way in to understanding them: rebellious, unexpected, and uniquely coherent.

Intense hues demonstrate the signature commitment to visual pleasure in this artist’s palette: Aldridge manages to combine irreverence with mythical undertones and emotional resonance. Leave your assumptions behind and know that fine art need not be without a bit (a lot) of fun.

And from William’s artist statement:

"My practice places itself within a contemporary debate surrounding gender and class, depicting an aspect of young manhood obtained directly from photographs within my immediate circle of friends. Taken from Instagram, these primary and secondary materials are connected through an established criteria of painting and camera.

The figures in my work occupy a distant temporal space moulded by a sense of emptied time, where young men perform such behaviours found between a period of adolescence and adulthood."
