Meet 2 New Artists: Igor Sokolov and John Butterworth
Igor Sokolov is a painter whose works bespeak the drama of nature. His sensitive artistry makes the case for a secret language of nature – answering the famous philosophical conundrum, "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"– with a resilient yes. Each piece is cinematically rich with colour and contemplation, as in ‘Autumn Sunrise’ (2020). Here a strip of amber sky fades to blue, not without its fire catching on the dewy morning grass. It’s a stunningly evocative scene, Sokolov using his talent for capturing the most surreal earthly colours in delicate and faithful brushstrokes.
John Butterworth’s portraits zing with personality, style, and conviction. His process-driven work involves an instinct for both manoeuvring paint and really getting to the essence of his sitters. In each image he combines collective memory, character, and the thrill of encountering someone you feel you’ve known forever. Gestures and fashion statements come together with smooth brushstrokes, giving the viewer a refreshing dose of presence and life. Most recently, Butterworth has taken inspiration from his artist residencies and travels across Jamaica, creating some of his most open and joyful work yet.
