Jasmine Wood and Sarah Larby
Jasmine Wood:
Jasmine Wood’s work antagonises the idea of a fixed and stable identity. Having grown up with both British and Japanese heritage, Wood gives artistic form to the mixed messages she encounters in transit between cultures. Bright, abstracted pieces draw on different visual languages, layering elements into productive oblivion. In one work, figures are isolated from the context they’d commonly be found with in a historic Japanese print – are they disgruntled men without women? Or are they kabuki actors playing a scene? Drawing on older sources, as well as the cutesy icons of contemporary “kawaii culture”, Wood explores the presence of the male and Western gazes. Her careful brushwork, acidic pinks and graffitied shapes make for potent disruptions.
Sarah Larby:
In Sarah Larby’s work, we’re left to figure out what she’s shaped by hand, and what the materials have shaped themselves. Her unruly practice incorporates objects such as wood panels and metal hooks, allowing resin to seep and slump into positions uncannily reflective of the human body. Her photographs further add an element of finality to the process-based, seemingly moving sculptures – in the end asking what self-determination and control really mean. As substances organically warp and bulge around traps, our nerves are put on edge, as if she were construing our very own organs. Objects become living totems of the surprising tactility and texture, that often moves unnoticed in the world.
