Meet 2 New Artists: Morgan Mowatt and Megan Milner

Meet 2 new graduate artists:

Morgan Mowatt: Seeking to depict her relationship to the sea through abstraction, Morgan Mowatt uses large, gestural brushstrokes and tender stains of colour across the mediums of painting and printmaking. Her desire to represent the experience of being within a landscape is mirrored in her making and using of various brushes; allowing her to manoeuvre around the canvas and experience being within the artwork. By transforming her bold painted strokes into screen-prints and lithographs, Mowatt generates a fascinating tension between the singular painting and multiple print. The movement of the strokes, coupled with their gentle evanescence, favours the affect of an ocean landscape over a direct representation.

Megan Milner: Memory and folklore vye in these energetic paintings by Megan Milner, which draw on a rich tradition of experimentation for the sake of multiplicity. Resisting straightforward nostalgia or romanticism, the work urges one to reconsider scenes displayed in vivid colour intersecting with irradiating perspective – to fantastic effect. Their intensity and their painterly joy bring into striking rendition an interrogation of space, the past and the expressive potentialities of Fauvism. Consider Milner’s ‘Yellow Boat’: it has the strange lucidity of a scene from Gaugin, and like Matisse’s ‘Le Bonheur de Vivre’ it uses colour non-naturalistically to convey strength of emotion.
