Meet 2 new artists: Sara Jolly and Kate Cunningham

Sara Jolly: The imperfections of life are the driving force behind Sarah Jolly’s art. Everything down to her choice of materials draw on the rawness of life on earth, involving climate issues and societal challenges we face as a species. Botanical shapes congeal into watery forms, capturing a fragility and wispiness that belies her singular act of creating new solid structures. Jolly's water-based and oil-bar paintings unfurl over large papers and translucent fabrics, allowing the volatile medium to move and mould to the painted subject they hold. In this way, the matter literally shapes the medium, with Jolly’s process of wiping paint evoking a unique transparency. Born in Germany and working in London, Jolly draws on her environmentally connected upbringing to create work that deeply examines the concept of sustainability.
"My paintings speak of conserving plant life and native habitats, which are increasingly neglected and eradicated."

Kate Cunningham: Clouds have existed as a poignant inspiration for centuries – from William Wordsworth’s famous poem “I wandered lonely as a cloud”, to Vincent van Gogh’s whirling skies in “The Starry Night”. Kate Cunningham contributes to this ‘genre’, 'with cloudscapes that sing with drama, emotion, and fleeting beauty. The grandeur of nature is fully captured, as skies swell with billowing clouds of varying shades and levels of mystique. Each painting is created through Cunningham’s in-depth process of photographing and researching landscapes, as well as noting the finer details of weather, lunar placements, temperature, and her own internal feelings. The result is work that seems otherworldly, yet also honest in a depiction of nature straight from the truth of human emotions.
"I feel that the impermanent structure and transient nature of clouds and landscapes relate closely to the ever-changing notion of 'the self' and our own temporal existence."
