More New 2022 Artists: Poppy Bailey and Aimée MacIntosh
Latest 2022 Graduating Artists
Silkscreen prints by Poppy Bailey have the quality of evidence: testament to the good times and those that made them. A pair of hands are the subject: mixing music at the turntables, and mirroring the artist’s hands. The visual texture of these works is slightly blurred, slightly photorealist: we are peering at history. They have a similarly charming simplicity – refreshing visual innocence – of a Patrick Caulfield print.
Scottish artist Aimée Macintosh is another 2022 graduate who works primarily in blue, when printing images from her forest walks. The medium of printing, when the subject is the fern as it is here – an ancient plant, 300 million years old – expresses an original artistic impulse: to capture nature.
Choosing blue for these monochrome works gives the sense that being in a forest is somewhat like being underwater: submerged in another element, where the light falls differently, through leaves or through water. Some of the artist’s works are printed on textiles, which hang from the wall – swaying slightly, giving a naturalistic effect.
