New 2020 graduates: Georgina Saunderson and William Fice
Georgina Saunderson & William Fice
Immediately eye catching, Georgina Saunderson’s work is designed to draw you in. Playing with bold colour and geometric shapes, her influences range from Brutalist architecture to the desire to create dream-like alternate realities. The new spaces that her work provides are designed to be invitations to indulge in slowness and give an environment for considered thought. She likes to push past the boundaries of just paint and create larger installation pieces that include furniture, where the audience is compelled to stop and sit amongst her work. However, her paintings alone still achieve this objective. She explores transparency through both painted panels and more organic inked shapes which cause her work to become increasingly multi-layered. These touches having a softening affect, showing her desire to reduce sensory overload, and gives more space for the viewer’s mind to muse on their individual thoughts. Mesmerising, her work unfolds before you.
William Fice creates paintings charged with both adolescent ennui, and the dignity of adulthood. By removing surfeit detail, figures come into presence through his lyrical use of colour – note the deep indigos and washes of apricot that build up intimate scenes. Context is only loosely gestured to, yet his assembled forms are uncannily contemporary meditations on masculinity, sociality, and identity. This is furthered by his taking inspiration from the disjuncture between compositional painting practice, and social media image capture. Fice continually questions what merging these two processes might elicit from the viewer, something new, or perhaps something nostalgic. His paintings work as organic structures rather than locked-in scenes, where figures coalesce in a shared guardedness.
