New Artists and Artist News: Robert Lanz, Sabrina Brouwers, Simona Ruscheva and more

Amassing, visionary forms coalesce in alchemic splendour in Berlin-based Robert Lanz’s work. See the backlit splendour of RL/P-13-309, evocative of William Blake’s revelatory etchings, finished with the unique effect of the varnish Lanz creates himself.

Sabrina Brouwers uses design principles to achieve harmony, in response to the shifting environment of this nomadic artist. In Voids, visual simplicity becomes a magnet for the complexity of experience: “a balance of intuition and strategy”.

In The Seer, Simona Ruscheva’s knowledge of Balkan folkloric traditions is the foundation. Myth and ritual are matched by deeply toned colours, an embroidered border, and the depiction of ceremonial dress and jewellery – all providing a framework for the painter’s transmission.

Elusive forms and a delicate pastel palette in Matti Gao’s paintings are reminiscent of contemporary artist Faye Wei Wei’s work. In his work The Canal the scene is as a memory: perfection on the brink of dissolving.

Henrietta Clavering’s sharp planes of colours and textured surfaces make for a clarified image experience, as in her painting of a greyhound, The Walk.

An Update on Artist Glib Franko in Ukraine

Glib Franko has left Kyiv for the west of Ukraine, where he is sharing his home with another young family. He has received the first instalment of the 10% going to him from the Ukraine solidarity fund (the rest of the proceeds going to the DEC), and from the commission-free sale of his own paintings. “You have no idea how valuable your support is now” he wrote to us this week, “I still don’t believe it’s happening.” He is in fact able to send his artworks from where he is now located: so although they will take longer, they will be on their way for those who make a purchase in support of him, his family, and his brilliant work.
