New Blood Art: Exploring by degrees
It’s graduation season and for the next two months I’ll be scouring the degree shows, searching for undiscovered stars like an astronomer surveying the sky. The next generation of leading artists are out there, and in this summer’s crop I hope to catch a glimpse of the future.
Back in 2004, on New Blood Art you could have invested in David Wightman or Iain Andrews for as little as; now their paintings sell for five figure sums. Our handpicked collective is full of proven artists. We have been honoured to work with all of them and to help them develop over time.
You now have the perfect opportunity to snap up the newest of our carefully selected artists, when their work is at its freshest and most affordable. It’s an exciting time of year, and you can expect a flood of young talent, swelling with energy and originality. The buzz has gripped the media too, New Blood Art will feature in tomorrow’s Guardian, so keep your eyes open for us.
We’ve already started our mission to leave no stone unturned by attempting to visit every degree show in the country. On a recent trip to Dundee we discovered two terrific artists and are pleased to be the first to present to you:
Morag Cullens, whose paintings are dynamic and engaging. Her subjects’ fractured identities glare outwards accusingly (like the pieces of a friend’s vase that you may have just smashed), making you shrink from their piercing gaze.
And Yasmin Davidson. Her style of childlike representation achieves a state of absolute subjectivity, untainted by the distorting imagery of popular culture and historical background. Her narrative style is at once humorous, striking and honest.
Next week we are off to Newcastle, the Slade, Edinburgh and Brighton to see what we might find. Watch this space.
