New Blood Masters Artist Charlie Yates Solo Exhibition

New Blood Art is delighted to announce Charlie Yates' next solo exhibition 'Kairos'.

Taking place between the 30th of June and the 22nd of July at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh, Charlie will be hosting a talk at the gallery on Saturday 1st July at 11am. The body of work in 'Kairos' aims to document Charlie's experiences in the delicate moments of his time spent exploring Japan.

Known for his evocative oils that blur the lines of memory and nostalgia, Charlie's previous solo exhibition received a fantastic write up in The Times.

We have a small though wonderful selection of work available on the website - it's a fantastic time to invest in Charlie Yates' work!

Charlie is a New Blood Art Master's Artist - graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 2019, the promising artist has seen plenty of success, including the 2020 Envision Arts Award and the 2021 Aon Community Art Award. His work draws inspiration from rediscovered photographs, using sun-bleached colour palettes to rekindle the sepia spark of summers gone by.

'Zephyr' appears before the viewer like the afterimage lingering behind your eyelids on a sunny day, or the negative of a rediscovered photograph from another time. The strong yellowish-green that comprises the majority of the painting has the quality of just-cut summer grass, whilst the deep turquoise is used forcefully, but does not overpower the image, small dots recreating the spots of age or exposure on an ancient print.

Quans Bar by Charlie Yates

'Formentera' captures the figures of four women on what could be a boat, or a sun-drenched coastal street. Their features are impossible to make out, but the atmosphere is clear as day - it is convivial, marked by long days of sun, sea and companionship.

'Quans Bar' captures a similar mediterranean summertime essence, the rich yellows and oranges speak of intense rays, the figures seated at a table turn to the viewer - blurry and indistinct, they remain unknowable, but here it is a distinct feeling which is isolated, and faithfully captured.
