New Work by Masters Artists: Peter Monkman and Jo Hummel
New work by Peter Monkman & Jo Hummel
Since winning the BP Portrait award in 2009, artist and art teacher Peter Monkman has painted his School’s Head Girl and Boy every year. In his series of portraits, behind the uniforms and pose, lie complex readings of youth, hierarchy and gender. The overlay of the genders help to create a more fluid abstracted reading without undermining an individuals appearance. A recent solo exhibition of Head Girl and Head Boy consisting of over 24 portraits was held at the Arts Fund Space at the Lightbox Woking to coincide with a publication under the same title with an introduction by Kathlene Soriano. A free signed copy is available with each purchase.
Meanwhile Jo Hummel had 3 solo exhibitions last year - in London, Sweden and Edinburgh. Her new body of work is about displacement. Later this month she will exhibit at the London Art Fair and she's currently working on 2 commissions, one for a Cruise Ship and a permanent installation at St Charles Hospital in Kensington.
