Raw, Powerful and Sublime: inspired by Marlene Dumas
Marlene Dumas is a painters' painter. With a career that spans over 40 years, she is one of the most influential living artists - many artists cite her as a major influence.
With a solo exhibition open now at Frith Street Gallery (until 16th November), we are reminded of the huge contributions Marlene Dumas has made to contemporary painting worldwide.
The exhibition - Mourning Marsyas - explores beauty and the delightful materiality of paint, alongside grief - both personal and collective. Walking amongst these looming works is a reminder of what we’ve all shared over the past five years. And what it means to be a mother, a father, a child, a leader, a woman, a man - with all the struggle, power and innocence that comes with each experience.
We’ve picked a few works by our fantastic artists at New Blood Art that capture something of the essence of Marlene Dumas. It could be watery pools of paint, a powerful female, or a hint of beautiful surrender.
Art Collections:
This theme brings to mind a few of our Art Collections, which are curated by New Blood Art Director Sarah Ryan. There are over 30 collections available, each drawing inspiration from various themes, art movements, and media - a perfect way to discover outstanding emerging art.
We’ve highlighted here two collections that remind us of Marlene Dumas. Explore fleshy and autumnal colours in Warm Notes That Recall Skin Tones (below), or rawness and sensuality in Action, Gesture, Paint (at the end of this email). You can browse all Art Collections on our homepage.
