Two Emerging Voices: Art that finds beauty in the everyday
Meet the Final Two Painters of the Emerging Art Prize 2024
We’ve spent the past couple of months introducing the roster of artists that have been nominated by their tutors for The Emerging Art Prize 2024. We have painters, photographers, sculptors, installation artists and everything in between.
Fifty-one artists have been introduced so far. Each of them bringing their unique talent and vision to New Blood Art. Today we are delighted to introduce a final two outstanding nominees: Hanna Kojima Boyd and Tilly Cooke.
Hanna and Tilly are both wonderful painters who completed their training at Falmouth University and Aberystwyth University respectively. These two art schools have an excellent reputation for producing great painters and we’re always excited to visit their degree shows.
Tilly’s work is charming and intriguing, adding poetry and quiet energy to moments of privacy and introspection. Bathers I & Bathers II in particular conjure a magical quality. They invite us to remember those special moments when we are alone and lost in thought. Painted in oil on paper, this pair would make great companion pieces and would look beautiful hung either side of an ensuite bathroom entrance for example - a reminder to find solace and see beauty in the seemingly mundane moments of everyday life.
Hanna Kojima Boyd is another impressive emerging artist. After finishing her degree earlier this year, Hanna has continued her education at the Royal College of Art. Her paintings similarly find beauty in the mundane, however she seems attracted to urban - rather than domestic - scenes. Her paintings playfully explore the pattern and rhythm within the structures around us - concrete, rust, brickwork and steel. There is an unmistakeable trace of people in her work, but also a sense of quietude and abandon. With a window open in 950 Brennan St. and a dim light glowing through retro glass blocks in 612 8th St. these are scenes that are begging to be explored.
These two artists, though exploring very different subjects, share a sophisticated, grounded palette that brings a sense of cohesion to their work. the limited, earthy tones in their painting - while focusing on very different forms - would create an interesting dialogue that would work beautifully in a curated collection together.
