Meet Remi Jablecki and Hollis Hui
New Blood Art Emerging Art Prize 2023
- Meet 2 new nominees: Remi Jablecki & Hollis Hui
Remi Jablecki is a multidisciplinary artist from Poland currently in his final year at Edinburgh College of Art. His large-scale oil paintings are enriched with themes of Polish tradition and the practice of gardening. Jablecki’s abstract garden landscapes are analogous for growth, labour, queerness, and belonging within society; highlighting the greater complexities of equality, dependency, and land. His artistic process explores colour, contrast, composition, and mark-making to symbolise and accentuate the presence of queer bodies and their parallels to plants.

Hollis Hui examines the intersection between social and cognitive issues of the human condition. Since experiencing an increased dependence on digital technology during the pandemic, this led Hui to discover the blurring nature of reality itself. They explore how we as humans find our place in this gradual shift to a digitized world. Does digital technology hold up a mirror to our physical world?
Hui analyses the construction of virtual identities though fictional strategies and how our biology has now adapted to process digital data with the constant sensory overload stemming from text messages, filled with emotive language but lacking clarity and truth. Hui looks at the current way in which we engage with media, specifically social networks, online platforms and other forms of digital dissemination, and how much choice and freedom we really have.
In the piece “BIoMICRo” Hui has cross contaminated technology and biology by placing memory SD cards into petri dishes used to grow bacteria. This is a great parallel between how media, specifically digital media, can infect and taint the human psyche.
