Selected for the 2023 RSA Annual Exhibition. Sam Wood paints scenes from everyday life on oil on wood panel – the people and architecture of Newcastle rendered with close attention. His process of layering, scraping and wiping creates a productive tension between abstraction and realism, between the observed and the half-remembered.
My work is rooted in everyday surroundings – the people and buildings of Newcastle. I layer, scrape and wipe to find the image: a process of discovery that holds abstraction and realism in productive tension.
