Luminosity 1

Luminosity 1

20 x 30 cm | 7 x 11 in

Original painting in tempera on gesso on aluminium.

Andrew Szczech
At the centre of Andrew Szczech's practice is a response to the breakdown of structures – both physical and ideological. His paintings are built through a process of erosion and repair: gessoed surfaces are cracked open, layered with pigment, burnished, and then stilled. What remains is a kind of weathered skin – distressed, luminous, enduring. Recent paintings draw on fragments of late-Victorian wallpaper from the V&A archive. Alice Back Emerging Artist Award 2025.

Concerned about buying a piece you haven’t seen in the flesh? ▾

We don’t currently have a gallery space where you can view the work in person, though depending on where you’re based, a studio visit can sometimes be arranged. What we’ve found, overwhelmingly, over twenty-two years: when someone falls for a piece on screen, the real thing is more, not less. Colour, surface, scale, presence. It works that way around. It’s why, across two decades, our returns have been minuscule.

But rest assured: if it isn’t right when it arrives, it can be returned within fourteen days.
