Looking to the Future
Looking to the Future
This painting recalls the past but looks to the future. A figurative painting of a pub interior, it's quite a complicated composition involving a lot of figures in various positions and attitudes. What struck me was that several of the people were looking directly at the camera, looking at the viewer.
The subject gazing out at the viewer and/ or painter has a familiar art historical precedent. I enjoyed and the idea of playing with this trope in a contemporary context of the pub. But also I imagined that some of these characters were looking out appealingly, addressing the viewer: this is the state of the world.
My paintings are about movement, rhythm and intensity of feeling. Much of my work originates in a recognisable world: from contemplative souls in interiors, to recreational scenes in urban milieus or dramatic landscapes, but I’m interested in drawing attention to the surface and material as much as the subject. Figuration becomes semi-abstraction.

Concerned about buying a piece you haven’t seen in the flesh? ▾
We don’t currently have a gallery space where you can view the work in person, though depending on where you’re based, a studio visit can sometimes be arranged. What we’ve found, overwhelmingly, over twenty-two years: when someone falls for a piece on screen, the real thing is more, not less. Colour, surface, scale, presence. It works that way around. It’s why, across two decades, our returns have been minuscule.
But rest assured: if it isn’t right when it arrives, it can be returned within fourteen days.
