The Long Afternoon
The Long Afternoon
Based on photos I’d taken, as a form of visual research and source material gathering, of the market square in Deptford, this is a figurative painting with an implied narrative. In making it I was also concerned with the geometric forms and composition.
An everyday scene, a slice of urban life, in which three people are absorbed in their own worlds, I was interested in the complexity of geometric forms in the architecture as well as those created by the interplay of light and shadow, and the strong contrasts of colour.
The pink of the mural is such a dominant element pictorially and has a dramatic impact, contrasting with the mundane activity of the characters.
What attracted me was the quotidian subject matter- that it’s an ordinary urban scene, yet there are moments of quiet drama or intensity in the colours and formal composition. The viewer can speculate as to what the figures might be doing or where they’re going.

Concerned about buying a piece you haven’t seen in the flesh? ▾
We don’t currently have a gallery space where you can view the work in person, though depending on where you’re based, a studio visit can sometimes be arranged. What we’ve found, overwhelmingly, over twenty-two years: when someone falls for a piece on screen, the real thing is more, not less. Colour, surface, scale, presence. It works that way around. It’s why, across two decades, our returns have been minuscule.
But rest assured: if it isn’t right when it arrives, it can be returned within fourteen days.
